What “The Paper” Teaches Us About Culture, Leadership & Reinvention at Work

I just binged the first season of The Paper (Peacock, 2025) and I couldn't help but make the connection to workplace culture. It’s a mini case study in culture shock, leadership missteps, and the emotional heart of organizational change.   The show picks up when a historic local newspaper, The Truth Teller, is trying to revive itself with volunteer reporters, a fragile budget, and a new (inexperienced) editor-in-chief named Ned.  All the right ingredients for lessons around leadership, normalized and outdated workplace culture, and team dynamics.

It’s giving The Office meets modern challenges, and I’m here for it!

Here are a few lessons to glean from the show:

Culture is shaped in small, daily interactions

From budget fights to gossip, story leaks, editorial decisions, and interpersonal friction — The Paper dramatizes how the “micro” culture elements (who is heard, who is shut down, who gets credit) define how work really feels.

Adversity can catalyze connection - if you let it

The newsroom is clearly under pressure. Resources are stretched. But these challenges bring characters together in weird, often awkward ways: alliances, betrayals, bending rules, creative pivots. Hard times can fracture or forge stronger bonds - whichever way your culture allows. The difference lies in how well leaders and teams lean into discomfort (versus shutting down).

Innovation needs room for tension and dissent

Conflict isn’t just for entertainment on The Paper — it’s part of the plot. When reporters question direction, management makes dubious choices, or editors clash over values, real friction emerges. Yet that friction is also where better ideas surface.

The takeaway: Merely suppressing or smoothing over conflict doesn’t lead to healthier culture - discomfort, well-managed, often drives creativity.

If you’re watching The Paper: What resonated most? What similar dynamics do you see (or avoid) in your team or org?

If you’re not watching The Paper: take a peek and post your thoughts here!
