Too many companies are still screening candidates based on “past performance” stories that don’t actually tell us how they’ll solve tomorrow’s challenges. In today’s environment, with AI tools that inflate resumes, polish interview answers, and even coach individuals in real-time, traditional measures of performance are no longer yielding the new hires we want and need.
What matters most now is problem-solving ability. Can this person walk into an ambiguous situation, assess what’s really going on, and chart a path forward? That’s what separates someone who can do the job from someone who can excel in it.
To modernize interviewing, we need to:
Replace generic behavioral questions with scenarios that mirror real business problems.
Dig into how candidates think, not just what they’ve done.
Prioritize adaptability, creativity, and clarity of thought over polished soundbites.
Hiring is no longer about who tells the best story. It’s about who can tackle the problems your team will actually face.
I’m curious, what changes are you making in your own hiring process to better evaluate problem-solving skills?
